Mercedes Schlapp doesn't have an simple job as the White House strategic communications adviser. It's not easy for Mercedes Schlapp to be the advisor to strategic communications for the White House. Schlapp is, however, not lost sight of her role. She works closely together with White House political affairs and legislative teams as well as policy shops and the wider communications team to oversee the rollout of policies. The focus has been on issues like school safety, opioids, infrastructure, and trade. At the moment, Schlapp is not working with many journalists. She gained attention in the wake of being announced as an option to succeed Hope Hicks, the communications director. Mercedes Schlapp does not have a straightforward job as White House strategic communication adviser. She must contend with a president that acts as his own communications director and a myriad of legal disputes that can throw off the White House's strategy for messaging and Cabinet secretaries who are caught in controversies of their own. But through it all Schlapp is focussed on the task at hand, working closely with White House's political as well as legislative affairs and policy shops, as well in the communications department to coordinate policy rollouts. So far, Schlapp has concentrated on school safety problems, addiction issues infrastructure, trade and drug issues. In her current position she doesn't deal extensively with journalists. However, she attracted a lot of interest in March, when she was mentioned as a possible replacement for Hope Hicks as communications director. The fighting has been nasty. The ally of Schlapp's, Tony Sayegh, and another candidate for the position, also named Tony, started jousting with each other during the media coverage. When Schlapp was informed that the Washington Examiner published a negative story about Sayegh, Schlapp stated that she called the candidate to be relationship with her.
